Finding light in December: reflections on our 2025 Christmas Memorial Service
For many, Christmas is the “most wonderful time of the year”, but for those coming to terms with grief, the Festive Season can be extremely challenging. That’s because colourful, brightly lit trees and cheerful music can make the absence of a loved one feel even more painful.
It was with those thoughts in mind that H. Porter & Sons staged our second annual Christmas Memorial Service, which took place on Thursday, 4th December at St Mary’s Church in Oldswinford.
Hundreds of members of our community braved the cold to come together and pay tribute to loved ones lost, underlining the comfort and solidarity to be found in shared experience.
Gentle and reflective, the service, which built on the success of our inaugural event last year, blended traditional hymns, including a rousing rendition of Jerusalem, with poignant readings that allowed everyone space with their thoughts.
We are truly grateful to the Rev. Jonathan Flitcroft, Rev. Claire Cox, Reverend Father Philip Griffin, Pastor Jill Berry and civil celebrants Debs Brace and Debbie Bates for their moving words on the night.
Besides readings, there were also many personal acts of remembrance. The service culminated with members of the congregation making their way to the front of the church to light a candle in memory of a loved one. The candles were then blessed by Rev. Jonathan.

A roll of honour featuring the names of all those being remembered was also read out. For those who were unable to attend, or wishing to see it again, this poignant record will be on display at our premises in South Road until Christmas.
We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who turned out on a cold night for a truly memorable event, and to the amazing team at St Mary’s for their warm hospitality and assistance. And it’s fair to say that the historic church looked even more stunning than usual, thanks to the wonderful floral displays provided by Jan Burbie Flowers.
We sincerely hope the service provided everyone who took part the strength and inspiration to carry them through the weeks ahead. Please remember that the team at H. Porter & Sons is here for you throughout the Festive Season and beyond to provide advice, guidance and support.
